Well its been nearly 7 months. Today is Monday. On Thursday I will begin my arc around the Pacific Rim, starting in Beijing. From there I will fly over northeastern China and to Siberia, across the Bering Strait, over my soon-to-be-home of Alaska, down the West Coast of Canada and America to Los Angeles, possibly the only city in the world that has a TV show named after its airport.

My family went out last night for my mother's birthday, and when we go out, I often have a question to ask everyone. For this, Brother S calls me, "The Instigator." Last night my question was inspired by a recent post on Bakerina: What is your earliest food memory?

...Mr. recalled meals with his father and dad bringing home a lot of fish. He remembered one night waking up and hearing noise in the kitchen. When he got there, dad was in his underwear eating a peanut butter and butter sandwich. In a few minutes, Mr. was sitting in his underwear doing the same.

I expected them to be friendly and accommodating. These men weren’t strangers to any of us. It was my own fear of ghosts and hollow aches and confronting the demons that kept me away, nothing else. When we stepped inside the open bay door there was an immediate call of “Little Sister!”, a nickname which sticks to this day, and comes from Brian’s insistence on including the word “little” whenever he referred to me as his sister. There were hugs and handshakes, and from upstairs, a voice, coming closer, and singing along loudly with the radio. I still remember the words as they got closer...

"I was scraping the car this morning when my next door neighbor was pulling out in her company VW bug with a picture of a dog on the side. She was in a panic cause she had to memorize a 12 page sales script. She asked if I'd help her. I had though she was in a play, not realizing it was a sales pitch. She then said it had been a mistake to move in with the man who is now just a room-mate and not her lover. She was a mess."
