Beer will not have to be labelled "contains fish" in the European Union - nor will wine or cider, according to the newsletter EU Food Law. This is the outcome of a decision which gives a temporary exemption from labelling for a number of derivatives made for allergens, such as the fining agent from fish that is used to clarify beer.

Since I can remember, words have always been my comfort.  During times of stress I play weird word games in my head.  The rules can vary in complexity depending upon the level of stress.  I can't explain why this is soothing or distracting but I can remember pulling words apart in my head as far back as my memory goes.  I learned to read by four years of age and I have continued to read for pleasure since that time.

Today, for the first time, I felt like an old hand at the university. I was sitting in my office, making the final few preparations for class, when an undergraduate who works in the writing center down the hall came into my office. She has just been admitted into Iowa State's M.A. program, and just like I did when I was a student there, she is emphasizing creative writing.

The next morning, as I was on my way out and about, I saw a bunch of kids gathered around, all of them looking down in one direction. One kid looked up and, upon seeing Zecar getting nearer to them, motioned his friends out of the way. And thereby was revealed, the object of their attention: a frog. Oh look, it’s just like the one I saw the night before, only this one’s not moving. It’s a dead frog. A strikingly pressed-flat dead frog.

With 14 members, travel seems to be the most common denominator, although none of us seems to blog specifically about travel. Five of us share an interest in coffee - and isn't it interesting that of the 5, 3 are involved in some way or another in academia?

Incredulous is the word that would more appropriately describe how I spent my day yesterday. You won't believe me if I say I met a star at the gym last night. Someone really huge. Like the eiffel tower and the leaning tower of Pisa combined plus a few more.
