four-thirty in the morning and she leads us through the failing crowds into a building with staircases disappearing upwards into each roof corner. the smoke is so thick you can catch it with your fingers tips and there are people leading up and away from each other in various directions.

two levels later and we are in a room typically sydney victorian architecture high ceilings and smooth floors. the paint is dark red and the lights dim and aloof. the dj is slumped insouciantly over a nina simone record and crowds of people smoulder and sink like sopping sedate fish on couches.
