I realize my life's been nothing but variations on two themes: hanging on and letting go. The curious thing is I've always found happiness on the latter, frustration and betrayal on the former.

Take suicide.

I tried it once and failed. The revolver's firing pin was missing and I tried to fix it myself. On the day I was to die--if my firing pin remedy succeeded, the next bullet after the test was to go directly to my skull--I felt all the grandeur of a bleeding bull in the last leg of a bullfight. All those years of hurt and rage, trapped in a house of shadows, they were all finally coming to a majestic end.

Now I'm not gonna rat on my folks here.
Let me just say two things:

1. Nothing is as life-giving as humility and the word Sorry.
2. People who can't look you in the eye must've done something nasty to you.

So I went to the back of the house, loaded the gun, pointed it to the ground and closed my eyes. Man, was it gonna be fun. I pulled the trigger.
